The word Kataklysmos comes from Greek and means “flood” or “deluge.” The name is connected with the biblical story of Noah’s Ark and the Great Flood, but in Cyprus the festival also carries older cultural and mythological meanings.  
Because Cyprus has always been closely connected to the sea, water plays a central role in the celebration. Traditionally, people splash each other with water, visit the coast, take part in sea games and enjoy events near the waterfront.
The History of Kataklysmos in Larnaca
Larnaca is considered one of the main centres of Kataklysmos in Cyprus. The festival has been documented in Larnaca since the 19th century, and it became an official municipal event in the early 20th century.  
The city’s strong connection with the sea made Larnaca the perfect place for this celebration. The famous Finikoudes Promenade and the coastal area become the heart of the festival, with stalls, concerts, traditional performances and large crowds gathering by the water.
Over the years, Kataklysmos has grown from a religious and folk celebration into one of the biggest annual events in Larnaca. Today, it combines ancient traditions, Orthodox Christian customs and modern entertainment.
Religious and Cultural Origins
Kataklysmos is celebrated around Pentecost, fifty days after Easter. In the Orthodox Christian tradition, this period is connected with the descent of the Holy Spirit and the religious calendar of early summer.  
At the same time, the festival has older roots linked to water, purification, renewal and fertility. Some traditions are also associated with ancient celebrations connected to Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, who according to mythology was born from the sea foam near Cyprus.  
This mix of Christian, folk and ancient elements makes Kataklysmos a uniquely Cypriot celebration.
